Musicmakers Vol 2

Musicmakers is back! Developed in collaboration with Musicmakers, designers of popular DIY musical instrument kits and music therapy instruments, Musicmakers Volume 2 features 13 deep-sampled folk & world instruments including three lever harps, 10-string lyre, kantele, hammered dulcimer, psamodikon, zither, handpan, and pitched percussion.

Recorded with 6 consistent stereo mic positions over a week of sessions in an ultra-quiet studio, this new library captures the unique sound of plucked and replucked notes, an evolution on traditional round robins which adds immense realism to both melodies and ostinatos on harps.

All instruments are sampled with multiple kinds of releases, attacks, and numerous alternative and extended articulations available.

FEATURES

An Epic Collection

The 13 instruments sampled include seven designed and made by the folks at Musicmakers, namely the flagship Epic Harp ►, Ballad Harp, Jolie Harp, Reverie Harp (zither), Hammered Dulcimer, Kantele, Old World Lyre, and Psalmodikon. Five additional instruments sold on their website, a handpan, whistle, and 3 mallet instruments by Freenotes, are included.

Building upon Musicmakers Volume 1, we have more than doubled the sample detail of each instrument, with more velocities and round robins than before, while maintaining the extensive range of articulations and effects.

Musicmakers - Epic Harp

State-of-the-Art Recordings

6 sets of microphones were used to record each instrument, providing different sound concepts at consistent distances. These microphones were hand-chosen for their low noise and high accuracy, over more popular recording mics an order of magnitude or two noisier or higher distortion, uncovering details and providing a level of clarity not heard in other libraries, from the loudest strike to the softest pluck.

Up close, the newly-released AEA N28 stereo ribbon mic provides a warm, wide sound with 100% mono compatibility, while famed Neumann TLM170’s provide an ideal close mic sound.

Slightly further away, two pairs of SDCs provide two contrasting ‘mid’ views: the laboratory reference Gefell M221 measurement omnis vs. supercardioid M310 SDC’s. Space and precision vs. focus and clarity.

Rather than compromise by choosing one or the other, VISAGE lets you mix continuously between the two mid mics, creating a “virtual mic” of any pattern between omni and supercardioid, dialing in your perfect sound.

The main position is filled by a pair of ◄ Microtech Gefell UM930. Among the most expensive and rarest solid state mics in existence due to its unique dual-capsule design, this microphone is extremely low noise (7 dBA) with an articulate, present character inspired by vintage designs.

Further out in the room, a pair of Gefell M950 wide cardioids with equally low self noise and spacious but detailed wide cardioid pattern provide the perfect sound for blending with your favorite samples from scoring stages and concert halls.

Realism & Flexibility

Each instrument was sampled across its entire range with a variety of playing techniques, with as many velocity layers as possible, around 5 in many cases. Each velocity layer was recorded a constant dB distance apart within a range of +/- 1.5 dB. This was then normalized to ensure perfectly smooth transitions.

Plucks are sampled with 2-4 RR for variation. Neighbor-borrowing RR is available if desired.

Also sampled are ‘replucks’ or ‘repetitions’, where a note is plucked repeatedly in quick succession. This characteristically results in a note being stopped and replucked while resonances are occurring, a unique sound not possible to capture via any other means. Here we have recorded replucks at all dynamic levels at 2-4 RR as well.

The repluck behavior adds immense realism to any repeating chords or ostinati lost in most harp libraries, as well as enhances solo melodic passages featuring repeated notes, and can be fully configured in time window or disengaged entirely if desired.

Also recorded are a variety of note stopping behaviors, such as stopping with a single finger (“soft”) or stopping all resonating strings (“hard”) as found in Musicmakers Vol 1.

A large array of extended articulations are included, from col legno psalmodikon to vibrato-plucked hammered dulcimer (gayageum-style), expanding the palette of sounds far beyond the scope of typical performance practice.

Harps also include real sampled glissandi, plus individual gliss ‘plucks’ (both with felt and finger) to build custom glissandi with full velocity control.
